thanks to  my tax return i will be credit card debt free in about one more month!!!

this is very exciting.  yes, i still have student loan debt, but that's nowhere near is burdensome as credit card debt.  now i can really get some saving done for the readily approaching grad schoo fees.

tom and i gardened for four hours today!  it was some serious hard labor.  we double tilled our soil, mulched, made rows, planted lots of seeds, and built a fence around our plot.

sooooo much exercise in the sun which will hopefully produce some delicious plants come june. very satisfying.

i've got too much california in me!  i slept right through the earthquake!

okay, so i did wake up early this morning when i heard stuff from our dresser fall on the floor, but i thought it was tom knocking into it.

darn!  i miss all the excitement.

i got a bike! a really nice pretty green one with hand brakes and multiple speeds and classic bike character. it's been awhile since i've had a bike and even longer since i have had a dependable one. i also joined the bike co-op so i can learn and do regular bike maintenance.

very exciting!

today was "early orientation" for gslis. it went great and has me all eager to start. it was pretty bizarre to be going through a "new student" orientation for a school i have already attended, but there was enough focus on gslis to make the experience exciting. the day was filled with tours of gslis, the library, and campus (which i ended up helping lead at one point). we ate a complimentary lunch at the illini ballroom (a little bit better than eating in a dorm cafeteria). the whole day culminated with the research showcase at lis which was interesting and well catered. i had the opportunity to meet face to face with the people from community informatics who i've been speaking with the last couple weeks. i'm fairly certain at this point that i'll be starting my assistantship in the summer, but not actually starting classes until the fall. i would like to start classes in the summer, but it doesn't sound like they have tuition waivers for early attendance. no big deal. it will give me more opportunity to save money.

all of this is really great, but i have to admit that i have this overhanging grey cloud over my head that in a very short time i will no longer work at conservation. it's been such a big part of my life the last 4 years and to not work there anymore with all those wonderful people is going to be a really hard closure in my life. i'm excited about everything that's happening, but i know deciding on a last day at conservation is going to be really really hard. not seeing jane every week is going to be killer! it's a good thing jody is moving down the hall from me in august or else i'd lose out on that fix as well. i need to take lots and lots of pictures. i'd really like to make it until july 20th (my 4 year anniversary at the place and jane's birthday), but i'm not sure it will be possible.

everything seems to be happening so fast all of a sudden. i didn't think i'd start working until august and now it could be as early as may. wow.

Yay! I got the research assistantship with the Community Informatics Initiative. This means I'll have a tuition waiver and small stipend. I am really excited about working with the program. From the look of the website and what they are doing it definitely jives with my interests and goals. Everything is all set up for me to have a successful grad school experience, now it just needs to start!

go greens! [Mar. 30th, 2008|10:07 pm]
i spent the weekend in peoria at the illinois green party state membership meeting. it was just what i needed to ignite some fire into my green activity. those meetings are always so energizing, particularly when they are well attended by good people. i'm happy to say i will officially be a delegate to the national green party convention this summer carrying my vote for cynthia mckinney!

i'm excited to start kicking the campaign season into gear. there are some great local candidates for county board who have a better than ever chance at getting elected. i want to start some serious fundraising for these efforts.

i really enjoy getting together at these meetings with a lot of the same core people working towards the same values. it's great to be a part of a community.

my green activity has been pretty low lately, but the state party meeting came just in time to get me re-energized. i definitely need to get some serious volunteering in before grad school starts. i'm not sure how much spare time i'll have once i start up my studies again, but i'm ready to give my efforts until then.

forget that last entry i wrote because i received my acceptance a few hours after writing it! i have been admitted into the graduate school of library and information sciences at the university of illinois! yay! now i can become a real librarian!!

i'm still going to try to do some of those items on that list i made, but not as a means of keeping me from being depressed because now i'm really happy!

okay, time to start hunting down a graduate assistantship.

i haven't heard from library school yet and am becoming very nervous that i am not going to be accepted. i've started coming up with ideas of ways i'm going to deal with rejection if that is what happens. i'm not talking about future plans or career plans, just ways i'm going to keep myself from getting completely and utterly discouraged and down on myself.

here's a list of things i will try to do if rejected from grad school:

-get a puppy
-write more including in my personal journal and fiction stuff
-read more including news and magazines
-get myself out of this burn out and back into green party business
-do a better job at keeping my apartment tidy
-exercise more
-go outside more
-cook more and bake/decorate lots of cakes
-hang out with girls more
-spend lots of quality time with tom
-find every star in super mario galaxy

ideally i'll do some of these things if i get into grad school as well, but if i don't get in they'll become very important as a way of keeping me sane.

oh yeah- happy leap day to all of you!! happy birthday to eric!!

tom and i went to he movies last night and watched atonement. i though it was an incredible movie. afterwards we decided we wanted to watch another movie so we went to vantage point. much much different than atonement, but still a fun movie to watch.

we've seen all five movies nominated for best picture so i'm actually excited to watch the oscars tonight!

my sister is moving to china!! how very much like her. i'm super happy for her and of course sad that i won't see her as much, but it sounds so awesome! she got a great job working in education. i'm proud of her and look forward to visiting her at some point.

too bad airfare to china is soooooo expensive!

anyways, i booked a flight to san diego in two weeks so that i can visit her before she leave. craziness.

i realized at this very moment that today is my birthday. i seriously forgot until right now. i'm guessing that's because i celebrated with my friends on wednesday and everyone made the night so great that it was enough to make me satisfied. even so, today is my birthday and i'm 23! absolutely no doubt that i am an adult.

wednesday was a lot of fun. so many great people came to celebrate with me and i received some really nice presents as well (wasn't expecting any other than tom's). today i'm working at the library 1-6 and then an overnight babysitting job from 6:30-tomorrow.

anyways, i'm no longer 22. crazy stuff. it's amazing how life never stops moving forward.
